| About | In the face of the radical changes introduced by the AFL, The Sydney Football League (SFL) was forced to re-structure. Existing clubs recognised the need to re-position as stronger entities to remain competitive in the upgraded local competition.
In our case, a new entity was formed which merged two of the most powerful clubs from the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney into one new club - the UNSW-Eastern Suburbs (UNSW-ES) Bulldogs.
The two clubs, prior to the merger in 2000, had a long AFL history in the Eastern Suburbs and are best positioned to provide a community-based Australian Football club for the enjoyment of the UNSW population and sports lovers in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney.
The East Sydney Australian Football Club was established in 1880 and is the oldest Club in the NSW AFL competition. It is also one of the most successful clubs competing, having won 27 Senior Grade Premierships.
The University of New South Wales Club was formed in 1962 and has also been very successful in the Sydney Football Association (SFA) competition having won 8 Premierships.
The club has also won two Premierships as UNSW-ES, being the 2002 SFL and SFA first grade premiers.
The merged club has the unqualified support of the NSW/ACT AFL Commission and has a home ground and sporting and training facilities at UNSW that are second to none in the NSW AFL.
UNSW-ES Bulldogs are a high profile part of a 40,000 strong University community. UNSW is the only university in NSW competing in a Premier Australian Rules League. The opportunity exists for sponsors to link the UNSW brand to marketing of their products and services together with exposure to students, alumni and affiliates.
