Liang, a surprise quarter-finalist at last year's World Championship, finished off the match in the eighth frame, sealing victory just before midnight local time in Shanghai with an outrageous fluke off the final red.

The fearless 21-year-old, ranked 40 in the world, looked to be well in control of the match before Mahitthi hit back, inspired by a fine break of 127 in the seventh frame.

But Liang held his nerve and will now face Mark Allen in the last-48 on Tuesday morning, with the winner taking on Ryan Day in the main draw.

Veteran Jimmy White qualified for the main draw with a 5-2 win over Xiao Guodong.

White continued his impressive recent form by racing to victory in just under two hours, rattling off five breaks of 50 or more - including an excellent run of 102 in the second frame.

The 46-year-old Londoner will face Mark King in the round of last-32 after continuing the recent resurgence that has seen him win eight of nine matches played at the qualifying school in Prestatyn.

White, who beat former world champion Ken Doherty 5-1 in the final qualifying round this month to earn his place in Shanghai, is sure to climb the rankings after slipping to 65 in recent years.

Anthony Hamilton will meet Marco Fu in the last-32 after coming through an epic match against Li Yan. The match had to be held over at 4-1 after it over-ran into the evening session, although the Nottingham-born Hamilton wrapped up the win easily once play resumed at around 10.30pm local time.

Meanwhile, Ricky Walden earned a shot against Stephen Hendry with a 5-0 whitewash of Anda Zhang, clinching the match with a break of 74 in the fifth, and Judd Trump came through a final-frame decider to beat Ah Bulajiang.
